Our DS is 14 months old. We made the classic mistake of soothing him to sleep with a bottle. He currently goes to bed at 7 pm after a 210 ml bottle, then has another 120 ml bottle at 10 pm when he wakes up, then maybe 90 ml at 12:30 am, then another at 2 am, then again at 4 am and a final one at 6 am before getting up either then or an hour later. He eats and drinks fine during the day! I honestly don't know where all this milk is going.

Last night I cut the 12:30 am feed. He screamed, and I do mean screamed, for an hour then took about 20 minutes of whimpering to settle (I went in and laid down next to him so he wasn't just left alone to cry it out). He then woke at 4:30 am and I gave him 90 ml but screamed for about 5 minutes, then at 6:30am he had 180 ml. The idea was to cut the 12:30 am feed entirely then wean off the 2 am by dropping the amount by 30 ml every 5 nights.

I don't know if I can stand it! Do you think I'm doing the right thing? Am I confusing him by giving milk some times when he wakes and not others? Should I give him a small feed at 12:30 am and taper that off? Is there anything else I can try?

That's a lot of milk, you must be knackered! Are you on cow's milk or still using formula? Is he eating enough during the day?

Personally I'd offer water (from a sippy cup) and cuddles for at least one or two of the feeds to start with and be consistent with your approach.

Thanks for the advice. I gave him 30ml water with 30ml milk which settled him. Im probably overestimating how much he actually takes each feed so it's not quite as bad as it seems. But fresh approach, I'm giving only 60ml and although he cried past night he did settle quickly so I'm hopeful that I can wean him off milk and just offer water.
