11 months old: what is happening NOW?!

DS has never been a good sleeper and since 6 months he's normally woken every 2-3 hours overnight but napped fairly reliably in the day.

He's breastfed and usually would feed back to sleep fairly quickly and we'd all get back on with life. He's got a big brother who I'd rather not wake overnight so I've found it easier to settle the baby than make him more upset than necessary. I've been ok with this.

It's been a winter of the usual bugs, colds and teething. He's just got over a chest infection and was seeming much more like himself but suddenly everything has gone totally out of control...

He's waking, upset, every single time I try to put him down. It's like he's in pain but the usual teething things haven't made any difference. It's as if something is stopping him from getting really soundly asleep.

I'm doubting everything: is his reflux back? Have the antibiotics given him a sore tummy? Is it teething? Some developmental thing about to happen? Is he still ill?

Or is this some normal blip that I should just grit my teeth through? I don't mind getting up a few times a night to settle him but I'm starting to go a bit mad with tiredness from not being able to put him back down. And I'm going back to work on Thursday!

Argh. I'll accept sympathy, anecdotes, pretty much anything except recommendations to sleep train. He had bad reflux for the first 9 months or so and still throws up if he cries for any time at all, which wouldn't be cool.

I'm a few months behind you and watching with interest. I have an ATROCIOUS sleeper and I'm very afraid.

How are you feeling about going back to work, is he picking up on your anxiety? This happened with me and it settled when we both got used to our new routine.

I'm happy to be going back: it's just 2 days a week and he's settled well into nursery. To be honest I'm looking forward to it - I love my kids but full-time SAHM is not for me... Until they are walking, talking (and sleeping!) I find babies pretty boring.

Here's hoping this is like everything else, just a short phase that ends as suddenly as it began.

Mystery part solved I think: he's roasting hot now too. Think there's yet another virus in play. I swear since he started settling in at nursery it's been one lurgy after another.
