hi, my baby (first one) is 5 weeks. at the moment she sleeps and feeds pretty erratically, so we tend to keep her downstairs with us till we go to bed 11pm / midnight ish and i feed her then too.

keep reading in books to start a bedtime routine, putting them upstairs in their cot early evening, but what age should we start that? i feel unready to banish her away upstairs and would miss being able to look at her in the evenings if she was away in a different room, but am i just being selfish and not giving her a routine for my own benefit? she just seems so little still...

some nights she sleeps midnight - 4, then 4.45 - 8am, others she just feeds every hour (nightmare)!

thanks. all the books are conflicting so i hope some real mums can help with their experience instead of a book.

new mum to maia x

This has been really useful as I am wondering the same thing about my LO at 11 days. Last night was the first night DD DH and I all went to bed together. Other than that we ahve been sleeping in shifts so at least one of use gets a good stint of sleep so DD sleeps in the living room.

Managed four hours in the bedroom last night.

think we did 6pm start bath, bed routine from 6 weeks he's 14 weeks now and all is going well (touching wood ,fingers crossed, buried bag of mouse bones and gold at a cross roads on a full moon etc etc) God bless the routine!

Although after a BF and much finger nibbling my DS falls asleep at about 7pm, reading the post maybe 7pm is the magic baby sleepy hour? If your ready and babs is happy I'd try that.

I started putting ds up for bed at about 7 weeks - and it was the best thing ever. He was really fractious in the evenings and I think he was just tired but couldn't settle with the light and tv on.

We still fed him at about 11pm until he was about 5 months, and then he slept through until 7 the next morning.

we just went with the flow and cuddled and fed all evening untill dd was about 12 weeks, at this point she showed signs of getting overtired in the evenings so i started putting her down at 7pm. it took a few nights, and we still have tears some nights (21wks) but she seems rested and relexed with this and i get to eat my dinner and snuggle up with dh!
