3.3 yr old - sleep has gone haywire overnight

Must add that DS has development delay so actually more like 2.3yrs. Since we adopted him he’s been a great sleeper, down at 7pm self settles, up early around 5am. Rarely waking during night and if he did he’d sit and cry in his cot and wait for us to come in to him.

Couple of nights ago after usual stories and night night, he lost it - hysterical crying, straight out of bed. His speech is quite delayed so he is not telling us what is wrong (we are asking him!). Tonight I’ve sat with him for an hour until he’s dropped off at 8pm despite being up since 4am with hardly any daytime sleep today (usually still has a good hour). Tried saying that mummy will come back and see him in a minute etc but as soon as I get up to leave his room the hysteria starts again. DH gets the same reaction. He seems genuinely frightened.

Wondering if it’s a development stage - he is getting quite a few more words coming and also the change of routine with Christmas. He’s back at pre school next week.

Anyone else experienced such a sudden change and if so how long did it last and how did you deal with it?!
