Advice for weaning a 6 month old off swaddle bags

Evening all,

I was wondering if anyone had any advice. My 6 month old daughter has been going to sleep in Woombie swaddle bags since she was three days old. We had real problems with her startle reflex and the swaddle bags were perfect.

Problem is that the company only make these up to sizes for 9 month olds (and that one I had to order from the USA!). They are also only 1tog in warmth and with winter coming that won't be warm enough.

She just won't sleep in a baby sleeping bag (I think they are too loose for her). Even though she doesn't need her Woombie to nap during the day (she naps in the pram downstairs).

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Could you use a blanket that is tucked in the sides of the cot so it's quite tight?

I've weaned off swaddle by using one of the bags that you can pop one arm out of at a time. You start by popping one arm our and have a rough few nights while they settle to that, then pop out both, ditto, then into a normal sleeping bag.

Hiya - I weaned my daughter off swaddles using the love 2 dream swaddle up 50/50 - it has removable arms which once removed turn it into a tight fitting thin sleeping bag. In terms of warmth, once you got her to the stage where she was ok having her arms out, you could put a sleeping bag over the top? So she'd have a tight fitting thin layer underneath to make her feel snug then a sleeping bag on top for warmth - obviously you'd need to adjust clothing etc accordingly to make sure she didn't overheat!

Thank you for all of these tips. I like the idea of trying one arm at a time. Then gradually more and more. I will give this a try. It is just so daunting when she sleeps so well all swaddled up but I know she will start rolling soon and the time will have come!
Many thanks!

Bear in mind that you ARE going to have some disturbed nights while you're doing this. She's very used to the swaddle. But it's only going to get harder if you wait.
