Does removing the breastfeeding-to-sleep association work?

Hello, sorry if there is already thread on this, but I'd love to hear what you wise mums have to say on this subject. I have a 5 month old who wakes frequently during the night and has trouble settling and napping (he is not keen on sleeping generally!). I have always breastfed him to sleep - trying to get him down any other way is not at all popular, but I'm willing to put in the effort to change things if it will help him sleep longer. Any success stories/advice?!

I tried to stop the feeding to sleep association when DS was little. Result: I had to fight him to sleep every time and he still woke up lots. I eventually managed to get back to the stage where I can feed him to sleep again, which I do every time. Now he sleeps much better - best has been 11 hours straight without waking.

Putting him down drowsy rather than awake is progressively teaching him to self-settle at bedtime / for naps: I'm very gradually putting him down sooner & sooner in the feeding process. (I 'feed for food' when he wakes, and then 'feed for comfort' before he sleeps). HTH
