I'm soooo confused! Is it overall amount of daytime sleep that matters, or how the naps are timed?

Currently having nap confusion/chaos here. 8 mth old ds sleeping brilliantly lately but getting up very, very early. This means his first nap is 8am ish (can't prevent it as he falls asleep during the school run). That means if he sleeps for 1 hr (normally) he is awake around 9ish. That means he needs more than two daily naps as he cannot go from 2nd nap to bedtime without meltdown. He has napped for 1 hr this morning and now is 1hr 30mins into his 2nd nap (very unusual for him anyway). When he wakes (which I suspect will be soon as he has not even had his lunch yet) it will be around 6hrs till bedtime. Does this sound typical? I think not..... but would be grateful for the lowdown on your lo's sleep habits.

My 8 month old wakes at 6, and sometimes earlier-he goes for a nap at 9 (he does nap on the school run but i wake him at the school gate and once we get home) as a rule he cannot stay awake for longer than 2 hours at a time (well he can but he gets very ratty) so he has an hour at 9 then goes down for another nap at 12ish after lunch, then he normally falls asleep on the pm school run and I manage to get him in the house without waking so in total has maybe another 30-45 mins.

If at the first nap at 9 he is not ready to go down until 9.30 then I just adjust the times by that 30 mins.

Have to say tho more often than not it all goes out the window by 3.30 and it is a case of get the baby asleep by any means possible so he is not to unmanageable by tea time

waves at cruisemum
I wouldn't worry. My dd is still a crap sleeper in the day time. She usually has half an hour in the morning and then nother nap in the afternoon if we go out. But yesterday she had half an hour at 11am (woke at 7.30am), abd then lasted until 5.30pm when she fell asleep face down under the olay gym. We did go out in the car but she didn't fall asleep. My 3 year old ds slept more in the day yesterday than she did
