Which would you rather, broken nights or ridiculously early mornings?

Both my kids go to bed early, and sleep very solidly, but are both up at 5.30am, sometimes 6am. I think I prefer this to getting up in the night, but sometimes, when I have been up for 2 hours already, brekkie is done and cleared away and my sons have already watched two hours of TV and it's still only 8am, I wonder............

I'd rather have broken nights, but that comes from having a DD whose typical 'broken night' is 'gets up, comes in, has a chat or some milk, goes back to bed'. I barely have to interact as DH is on the door side of the bed, and I'm a very heavy sleeper. If they were more like the night we had when she was 21 months old and DH was away and she stayed awake for three hours in the middle of the night for no reason, then I'd rather have early mornings.

Sometimes I think I would like some predictability - night before last she slept for 12.45 hours (!!!) and last night 9.30. Was NOT ready to get up.

would much rather be up in the night

the feeling of snuggling back into bed once he's gone back off is bliss!

early mornings are a killer and the days are tooooo long!

TheGoddessBlossom · 21/05/2007 18:56

hmm, pretty split down the middle I'd say...........

Broken nights!

OrmIrian · 21/05/2007 18:58

Neither. As I've had both for a more or less solid 10 years I think I'm due some real sleep.

I'm going to say broken nights now - 4.45am this morning. It's going to be a loooooooooong day............

i am starting to treat every waking prior to 6am as a night waking and ignore it!

Lazycow · 23/05/2007 16:45

Definitely early mornings

I had 13 months of very broken nights followed by another 13 months of 5am/5.30am wakeups and the early wakeups are much better. I do know what you mean though by 10 it feels like you have been up all day. I never understood how people say their kids should watch NO tv. How do you get through the 5am-9am terrible period without SOME TV.?

Luckily ds (now 2.5) is sleeing later most days. In fact he has to be up by 7am and to get to CM on time and it is only in the the last month that we have ever had to wake him up to get him up.

Tutter · 23/05/2007 16:46

given that ds has been waking at 5:30 for the last month, i would say i'd be happy to be up once or twice a night if it meant a "lie-in" til 7:00

but maybe i wouldn't think so if ds were a child to wake in the night...

Lazycow · 23/05/2007 16:51

The problem for me was that broken nights pretty much went hand in hand with esrly wake-ups for DS. He regularly woke 3-4 times a night AND was up for the day at 5am. There was no snuggling back to sleep. even when he was breastfeeding (which he did til 2 years old) the most I got was 30-40mins out of him in the morning while he fed then he just wanted to get up.

Actually that isn't true - I remember ONE morning when he was about 14 months old where he breastfed for about 40 mins and fell asleep at 6am until 7.30am. I remember it so vividly because it was so unusual.

I was thinking about this very thing at dawn this morning. I would go for the early start.

Never had broken nights. Do get early mornings, still. Shocked to see people prefer broken nights. Gosh !

Wednesday Adams - that was my ds until about two and a half so don't feel too smug just yet
