20month old struggles to sleep when unwell- tips?

My 20 month old boy has had viral wheeze/ croup at least once a month for over a year now. He was early and struggled at birth/shortly after, and it seems his wheeze issues have emerged as a result.
When he’s going through a wheeze/croup spell, he can be up to a week needing his max inhaler dose/steroids/medical care. His sleep goes all over the place and I’m wondering if anyone has any tips! When well he self settles with no crying for night time (12 hrs) and nap (2hrs). When unwell he can’t settle himself but won’t really let me settle him either! Tonight I got him to sleep on me at 9pm (very unusual) but he was up again after 10 and he’s still up now. I’ve tried - cosleeping, rocking, taking him downstairs to ‘tire him’ (he’s way overtired)/start again, reading to him, cuddles, breastfeeding, cup of warm milk, back/head massaging, and probably other things but I can’t think just now! He has lost about 16 hours sleep overall since Friday and that can’t be helping him recover. Sleep deprived so be kind to me- what works for you when nothing else will??

Sorry- I forgot to add the crucial complicater!! Due to the breathing issues he should be kept as calm as possible and as a result any crying solutions not an option. We do controlled crying to get him back to routine when he’s well, and that works really quickly, but can’t use it when he’s unwell (and he knows it!)
