I wonder if anyone can help before I start ringing my GP. My 14 week old usually has a long nap (1.5 hours) in the morning then maybe 40/50 minutes around 1pm then again around 4:30pm. However, today she has had a 2hr morning nap, 1.5 at lunch time, and she has been sleeping for the last hour and 40 minutes and is still sleeping! I tend to think a baby only sleeps when they need to so I am loathe to wake her, but I'm concerned something may be wrong. Any advice?

They do have sleepy days but if you're worried ring the GP - they won't mind I promise.

I assume your baby woke up after posting the thread?

It could be a growth spurt? They grow when asleep. I think they also try to catch up on sleep if they've been sleeping less. Could she be coming down with a bit of a cold?

My newborn dropped his sleep back to 9 hours per day when my MIL came to stay and wouldn't leave him alone. This went on the whole time she was here (grrrr!). He subsequently missed his first growthspurt. The moment she walked out of the house (goodbye!!!) he slept 8 hours solid. Woke fed slept woke fed slept and after two days grew enourmous, and then just went back to normal.

GPS and health visitors are sympathetic. I think I've called NHS direct on a weekly basis since becoming a mum!

This really is nothing to be concerned about. Do you sleep for exactly the same time every night? Well, your baby has days when she is sleepy and days when she is not. Don't worry.

I'm sure she's fine.Does she show any signs of being unwell?

Thank you for all the replies. It turns out that I was the one getting sick and have been in bed ever since I posted the original note with a violent stomach bug. Luckily dd's extra sleeping continued which I was grateful for, rather than worried. We are back to normal today, and luckily no sign of infection in dd!
