gro bags in the summer?

munz · 20/04/2007 19:04

this is the first year we've had them - last year was a sheet only and vest etc.

we've got one a 2.5 - which is too warm now with his vest/pj's etc on, but I was thinking would a 1 tog be ok during the summer months? (i'm thinking nappie only under neath) or would it not be worth investing in another one again?

munz - glad you asked this is i was about to! I am also wondering if grobags hamper their ability to manoeuvere in the night. ds never rolls onto his tummy at night, just his side occasionally. yours???

Nbg · 20/04/2007 19:25

You could probably use a 1 tog now and maybe for the next month or so but I would say at the height of summer he may just want a sheet.

cruisemum1 · 20/04/2007 19:26

what about the rolling?

AnnabelCaramel · 20/04/2007 19:28

My lo often wakes up with his head where his feet were when we put him to sleep. I don't think they hamper rolling; my lo just doesn't do it at night - he sees it as a daytime fun thing I think?!

munz · 20/04/2007 19:29

no mine rolls all over the place - we've never had any probs with the gro bag tbh with his turning etc - or blankets come to that - he jsut gets cold, wakes up (like now) and crys till we sort him out! lol.

lol at grobags hampering rolling. Every time I check on DS he's in a different position. Crossways across his cot, legs half up the side, head down the bottom of the cot, you name it.

munz · 20/04/2007 19:37

to be fair thou I was anxious when he first went inot one about the rolling etc but MN advised me if he can roll one way he'll roll back, and also you can tuck the bag into the end of the cot so they don't roll - not that that stopped J he rolled regardless!

Can I hijack pretty please?

I'm a little confused by grobags. I love them but am confused!

Ds is 3 months, he has 2.5 tog and it still being a bit chilly ooop north at the moment is fine in them wearing a sleepsuit underneath.

If I buy 6-18 month 1 togs for the summer will he be able to use them? Don't have the money for 0-6 and 6-18 summer ones. I noticed there are also 0.5 tog ones, is it better to get 1 tog or 0.5 tog and wear more under the 0.5 tog at first? And since 6-18 months will span a variety of seasons do people tend to just use a 1 tog and warm pjs in winter with maybe a blanket or buy a set of bigger 2.5 tog bags too.
Argh the confusion!
Sorry if I'm stealing your thread munz!

I've only got a 1.0tog and a 0.5 tog. DS wears the 1tog year round except when temp goes above about 25/26C. What he wears under the 1tog varies from long sleeves&bottoms to short sleeves & shorts to nappy only. At the moment he is in a short sleeve top and long bottoms. His room seems to be warmer for some reason. In the winter, if it gets really cold, I'll throw a blanket over the top and it seems to move with him.

DS is rather tall, so has been in a 3-5yr bag since he was 2yrs. He was too tall for anything else. I'd buy the bigger bag, especially as the 0.5 bags have poppers to make them shorter.

If it is v.v.v.hot he goes nappy only.

DD never seemed to get cold and wore a 1.0T all year too. Wasn't as hot in the summer she was little so never had a 0.5tog for her

munz · 20/04/2007 20:10

no not at all all good questions I didn't realise there was a 0.5 tog - it would prob do me better to get one of those actually.

as for the size tbh it depends on the size of your baby I would have thought. they can be quite generous in size as it is. if I was to get J another now it would be a 0.5 tog in 18 months (he' currently 14) but i'd use blankets a an add on once it was too cold until I could get another bag (2.5 tog) hth (prob not thou! lol)

thanks USA mum - looks like the 0.5 will be the way to go then, is that roughly the equiv of a sheet (thinking with just a nappy come high summer - or I guess just a nappy by then will be fine?)

Thanks USA and munz
Think I'll get 1 tog in 6-18. Unlikely to be leaving uk this summer so don't think it will get too hot! And suppose in winter he will be older than this year! Being born in Jan and all he was in 2.5 tog plus blanket.

USAUKMum · 21/04/2007 13:13

A 0.5 equiv of a sheet.

Last summer it climbed to a blistering 33C in DCs room for about 2 wks straight!!

We now have fans for all rooms.

BettySpaghetti · 21/04/2007 13:19

Keep an eye open on Tchibo as I bought a lovely summer one from there last year for a very reasonable price. I think its a 1 tog but was ideal for DS with t-shirt/shorts pyjamas underneath.

empie · 24/04/2007 12:01

I'm a big grobag fan. DD (10 months) is now in a 1 tog grobag with a long sleeved sleepsuit underneath. When it was colder she had a 2.5 tog and then 2 layers of clothes.

We have a 0.5 tog for the high summer - she'll have a short sleeved body suit or a nappy on underneath depending on how hot it is!

princessCROComel · 24/04/2007 12:14

We have a towelling one that dd wears (ds before her) all year round. Had a 2.5tog 6-18m one. This one is 18m-3yrs. Not sure what tog it is as been washed so much you can't read label. Its a grobag one make one in towelling.

She wears different things underneath depending on temp. In really high summer, just a nappy. Other time a vest with long or short sleeves. At moment vest and footless sleepsuit.

Lovage · 24/04/2007 18:10

Definitely doesn't stop my LO (9 months) moving around - came in this morning to find him standing up in his cot for the first time!

He's still in 2.5 tog with babygrow underneath but our house is cold and we're still using our winter weight duvet. I reckon I'll change what he wears and then to a thinner growbag once we change our duvet.

About the cost - all ours are from NCT sales where they usually cost £5 - 7. You have to pick a bit carefully to find ones where you can still read what tog rating they are, but we've always managed. We did get one from Tescos for £10 when he was newborn but I don't know whether they do them for older babies.

losty · 24/04/2007 18:13

not read whole thread, but both my DSs have worn gro bags - and wore them all year round. Even in the height of summer they wore their thin gro bag with just a nappy. It was their 'comfort blanket'.

I used the 0.5 tog ones in the summer

princessmel · 25/04/2007 12:49

Agree about them being like a comfort blanket. Once when it was really hot I said to ds, 'lets not get in it today, its too hot' and he couldn't get to sleep. As soon as I zipped him up he fell asleep.

We do use fans in their rooms when its really boiling.
