*********dummy! Too pathetic to take it away, but up every hour every night shoving it back in. Any suggestions?

DD 9 months old. Completely addicted to dummy. Have made 2 feeble attempts to remove it, but today she tried to suck herself to sleep on her sleeping bag.

Too scared to try a soother saver in case it is too dangerous. She has (at the last count) 10 dummies in her cot, but still cries out.

Please help, am going mad from lack of sleep. Have no backbone at all.....

ohmigod fizz I totally symathise. I had this with dd1 at this stage and it was the worst time for me. The tiredness was worse then than when she was a new born.

I have no easy solutions. I didn't get rid of the dummy then, she gave it up voluntarily just before her 3rd birthday.

I would say the quickest solution is to be tough and get rid of the dummy. You'll have 3 nights of hell and then it'll be forgotten, or you can carry on as you have been until she can retrive the dummy for herself.

Tough decision though and there is no easy option. Good luck

take it away .. it'll take a couple of days and she'll be fine .. those 2 or 3 days and nights will be hellish .. but she will be fine

Am also going back to work in 5 weeks..........will be knackered...

dummy holder, she will work out how to grab it. They're not dangerous, they have v short leads (not leads but can't think what to call them, ykwim!)

2yrs on and I say get rid of the dummy - would rather have the 3nights of hell than regularly having briken nights

Please tell me more. I bought what I think was a dummy holder. It clipped onto her clothes with a length of ribbon about 4" that had velcro at the end to fasten dummy to.

She pulled clip off in about 5 minutes. Then tried shortening ribbon, and clipped it on neck of her sleeping bag. Dummy fell out, and small length of ribbon at side of her neck. I was really worried by this, so removed it.

Should they have a smaller length of ribbon and a tighter clip?

In that case, I would strongly suggest getting rid - now. You'll feel like shit and she'll scream and cry but you will be doing the right thing. I have no issues with dummies but it's for the best that she doesn't have one now anyway. The fact you'll (and she'll) get a good nights sleep is an added, and vital, bonus!

And can I get one at 7.15pm on Easter Sunday???

It sounds like what you have is a dummy holder. Maybe she'll take a bit to get used to it. In your position I'd persevere.

Up to you whether you want to lose the dummy now or not but personally, I think they're fab. Small babies like to suck and I don't see any harm in them, especially at the age of your baby. My ds had one until he was 3 (only at night towards the end) and doesn't now, obviously, he's 9.5! And dd, who is 3.5 still has one at night but I think will naturally stop wanting it over the next year (she hasn't had it in the day for ages and ages). But up to you. Since your baby DOES have one, I wouldn't try to lose it yet, I'd do whatever it took to get some sleep.

I once contmeplated sellotaping DS's dummy in place at this same phase.
Unfortunately chose to perservere.
Do remeber arranging a number of dummies in an arc shape around his head in th ehope he would reach out and find one of them.
Would probably be best to get rid, but wouldn't know how to I am afraid!

Yes, they're safe. It would need a longer piece of ribbon to strangle a baby. Mine always had them pinned on their chests, about half way down. They got so they knew where it was.

We decided to stop using a dummy when DD would frequently wake at night and cry for it. I'm so glad we did. She was younger (5 months) and we only used them for about a month. She did cry but discovered her thumb and still sucks it to sleep now at 2.3. She also liked to hold a blanket/soft toy. Does your DD have a comfort item?

Throw it away - then you won't be able to use it again.

DD has a bunny that she takes to bed, but it's the comfort sucking she likes. She as been poking her thumb in her mouth a bit lately, so am going to investigate that further.

Don't know how bad she was last night because dp had her, but am so totally sick of whole thing. Put 11 dummies in bed with her last night, but still heard her waking up..........
