1 yo now refuses to nap at nursery

My ds always had no problems taking his naps at nursery. I worried about his naps before he went there because I used to cuddle him to sleep for his naps, but he happily dropped off to sleep by himself at nursery.

Then he missed over a week of nursery because he was ill, during which lots of cuddle to sleep because he felt so poorly, but also paradoxically I put him down awake a few times because he was so sensitive I was keeping him awake, and he went to sleep on his own. Great I thought, that's a useful one to learn. But now he is back at nursery, he is refusing to sleep there. He comes home exhausted, goes out like a light when I put him to bed, sleeps well all night but wakes up at 5am.

Do you think the early waking is connected to lack of nap? Partly he is waking then because he poos (see my other thread below). Also, he is quite grotty and grumpy when he gets home from nursery because he is so tired, and it's spoiling my bit of time with him . He goes to bed at 6.30pm cos he can't last any longer.
