Advice on when your child should go from a cot to a bed

Hi, I have a little boy and I am just looking when to start putting him in his bed. It's a cotbed so it isn't that high from the floor like a normal bed. When did other people start putting their little ones in their own bed?

My first was coming up 3 when he went from a cot to a bed. He seemed content in the cot so felt no need to move him until he was big for it.

My youngest learnt to climb out at 1 1/2 so made the transition then.

My first moved at 20 months (we took the side off the cotbed) as he worked out how to launch himself over the bars. My second is still in a cot at nearly 2 1/2 and perfectly happy so she will stay in it over the summer I expect

Good question

My eldest 3.8 is still in her cotbed with the side off

Not felt a rush to get a larger bed tbh

Oops think I misread the q

My children were all just past their 3rd birthday.

If baby isnt climbing and is happy in the cot, there is absolutely nothing compelling you to take the sides off. I think the longer you leave it, the easier they take it.

We needed the cot free for baby no. 2 so transitioned our DS1 to a cotbed (with a rail at the top to stop him falling out) when he was around 2 years old, a couple months before DS2 was born to get him used to it. He would've been happy to stay in his cot for longer but had no trouble moving to his "big boy bed" when he did.

My ds is 18 months and loves his cot. He goes straight down and rolls around for a bit before dosing off. He has never tried to get out so we aren't in a rush to move him although all 3 of my sisters were in toddler beds by 18 months and using a quilt and pillow so I do feel slightly "behind"!

All mine started climbing out so took the sides off around age 2

We co slept and the cot was just used for junk to pile up in. To make the room look tidier we removed the sides off the cot to stop us from dumping stuff into it. DD got very excited about a bed suddenly being in her room and has slept in it since. She was almost 18 months at the time and had only ever been in with us before then. I think it totally depends upon the child. It was a shock to me that she wanted to sleep in a bed on her own and i had to do an emergency trip to buy a bed side guard to stop her from rolling out.
