How much daytime sleep for a 1 year old?? Any advice/thoughts appreciated...

My lo seemed to be getting the hang of daytime naps... a 45 or 35 in the am and then an hour and a half or under at lunchtime ... but now not going so well (cot bouncing and then crying and downright annoyed that it's naptime) He seems to get tired in the AM so in a way I wonder about cutting this nap...however I've read that a lunchtime one is what this age group needs... and as he now is getting uppity about the naps I'm wondering if a change in routine is in the pipeline. Selfishly too it would make things easier not to have to work around 2 (at home) daytme naps... any thoughts from other mums appreciated. Ta

Ds went to one at this age but that was because I went back to work. He was absolutely fine on it though. Perhaps an earlier but longer single nap?

like at 12ish beansprout? thanks for help on this. yesterday had his morning one and then got in a right frenzy about the lunchtime one (and that was just me1 )... we were both exhausted by the evening and bedtime so thought I had better do something...

Hi pp.

I have a 12 month old who I'm gently encouraging into one long sleep a day.... Doesn't always work - if he has got up early then sleeps earlier in morning and can't go the whole afternoon (so needs another mid afternoon nap). My ideal is one 11am - 1pm nap. I also have a 3 year old so working around 2 naps a day is a pita

My DCs used to sleep for about 2 hours after lunch at this age. Bung them in bed and leave them there. Sound's a bit hard but they are really tired and need to sleep at this age especially if it is their only daytime sleep. I would drop the morning nap which will encourge him to sleep longer at lunchtime. Best thing to do to keep them awake in the morning is an "activity" toddler group etc or just going out shopping or to the park. My eldest 2 used to cot bounce (shared a room) - I left them to it until they got bored and fell asleep. Now none of them sleep at all during the day - even the 4 month old - so make the most of the peace .

thanks mrs.bond... v helpful. I like the pita abbreviation! took me a mo to work it out...

castlesintheair...hhmm i now get a vision of all the babies across the land bouncing up and down crazily...

arrghhh my lo is now shouting and screaming and not at all happy about it being naptime. Just when we thought we'd got things sorted but that's just silly isn't it. Babies/children I guess are constantly changing..Well that's what I'm learning. but yes CItheAir, I think you are right perhaps I do need to bung him in bed... he DOES need to sleep though he apparently doesn't think so today. Ta for your advice... MUCH APPRECIATED Pita situation continues so do need to improve this before I've torn my hair out totally

DD has just gone to 1 nap in the last month. She's also just 1. It's so much simpler. I feed her at 11 and put her straight down nice and full of food. She then sleeps till 1.

puffling · 25/03/2007 23:38

PS; If you are still doing the am one, consider making it later and also shorter so that he doesn't fight his lunch one. With dd, she did 10.20 for 20 mins and 1pm for 1 and a half hours.

DS is 1 on Tuesday and has 1 or 2 naps a day. Sometimes it's 2 hours each, sometimes maybe just 45 mins midday. I just let him sleep when he is tired, unless it is really late then I try and keep him going Normal would be 1 hour am and 1-2 hours PM. xXx
