10 month old early rising!

Hello,

I have posted on here before regarding DS's sleep. In short it has never been great and he has never been close to 'sleeping through'. That's fine, I understand babies wake at night. Recently however he seems to have developed a habit of waking very early (between 4.30 and 5) and refusing to go back down. Given he is still waking in the night as well this is getting a bit tiring!

Prior to this recent change to early waking he had been waking 1-2 times a night, usually somewhere between 10 and 11 and then somewhere between 1 and 2. He would then wake for the day at around 6ish. This was perfectly manageable.

Around 2 weeks ago he started crawling and since mastering this has started pulling himself up on furniture. He also caught a cold from which he has now pretty much recovered. I initially put the early waking down to cold/developmental leap but it shows no sign of passing.

Does anyone have any tips? I'm conscious that early waking can be a sign of both too much and too little daytime sleep so it's hard to know how to manage his naps! Because if the early waking he is normally reading to go down again at 7.30 but I try to stretch this to 8/8.30 is I can. He will often have 1.5 hours nap in the morning. He normally sleeps again around 1.30 for a further hour. Bed time is 7(ish).

He eats well in the day and is still breastfed on demand. I feed him when he wakes in the night (he guzzles it down and seems genuinely hungry). I have tried offering more milk/food in the day but he won't breastfeed much in the day unless it's at nap time.

Thanks in advance!

That's a great stretch! An extra hour and you'll be sorted!

Our night wasn't too bad given his naps were terrible yesterday! Down about 8ish (a bit later than normal but he didn't wake from his nap until 4), he woke at 1 and 4 then up for the day at 5.30.

He had an epic 2 and a half hour nap this morning! I wondered whether to wake him but decided just to let him sleep. He's asleep again now in the car (I'm parked up waiting for him to wake up) I think I'll keep this one to no more than an hour otherwise I doubt he'll want to go to bed tonight at all!

How was your night mini?

Not too bad here given how hot it was! He slept 7.15 till 5.15 with one wake up at 1am. He had another epic nap this morning, I woke him after 2 hours and 15 minutes! We've got baby sensory today which usually tires him out so we'll see how we get on!

That sounds pretty good!

We had 7.30-4.30 (couple of resettles right at the beginning - then milk and back to sleep at 5.15 for another 45 minutes thank goodness!

It's definitely loads better this week and I don't know if it's just that he's hot and sleeping more deeply!

How was your bank holiday weekend?

We had two hideous nights Friday and Saturday. Friday night he was awake from 12 till 2 for no reason that I could fathom. He was quite happy being cuddled but screamed as soon as he was put in the cot! Saturday night he decided 4.10 was a good time to start the day! He'd had fairly decent naps so no idea what that was about!

Yesterday he had rubbish naps, a decent 1.5 hours in the morning but we were out in the afternoon and he just refused to go to sleep. Finally fell asleep in the car on the way home at about 4.30 and had 30 mins. Went to bed at about 7.30 and SLEPT THROUGH till 5.30! First time he's ever done that! I heard him at about 4 and was on my way to him when he went quiet. Left it and went back to check on the monitor and he'd gone back to sleep!

I'm confused! I'm sure tonight we'll be back to normal service, naps have been rubbish today as well! Hope things have continued in the right direction for you.

A mixed bag here too!

Friday was ok, then the past two nights he's been up around 4 and struggled to get back to sleep. It's been a busy weekend though so may have been overstimulated I suppose.

He's also drinking loads of milk at the moment - poss as he's been thirsty in the hot weather, or maybe a growth spurt - so trying to ensure he's not hungry.

Good luck tonight!!

Lots of milk being requested here too! I offer water loads but he still gets most of his fluids from breastfeeding I think. He eats a fair bit but I'm offering extra snacks too.

Last night he did 7.30 till 5 with one wake up at 2. He's had a two hour nap this morning so we'll see how we go!

Hope you have a better night!

Hi, just a couple of suggestions...

Make sure the room is completely dark

Don't reward an early wake up with an early nap - go for a by the clock routine

Ideally nap at 10 & 2.30 if on 2 naps

No milk between 7&7

MiniMaxi · 30/05/2017 10:16

Thanks missanony - i do need to make it darker and I think a stricter routine might work well, but trying to maximise sleep to overcome chronic overtiredness at the mo

Sunshine, last night better thanks! He woke at 11.30 and had a couple of ounces - probably would've gone back to sleep without but I wondered if it would help avoid the 3-4am wake up. He made it to 5 so that's progress I suppose! Woke up starving then snoozed a little bit from about 6.30-7. Napping now...

If you get some of this, hem it with wonderweb and Velcro it to the windows, it will be a cave in there. Dunelm will sort you out!
