How do people REALLY black out their DC's rooms?

We have black out blinds from IKEA and black out curtains from Dunelm Mill and light still bleeds around the edges... short of spending a fortune on proper fitted blinds or having bin bags constantly taped to her windows I'm running out of ideas!!

You could use Velcro pads to make sure the sides of the curtains are right up against the wall.

Other than that I can't think of anything that doesn't involve spending a fortune.

Not actually sure it's a good idea to get too fixated on totally dark bedrooms. Is there a particular reason op? Remember a lot of children find a bit of light in a room reassuring. And getting used to sleeping in a less fixed environment ie sometimes lighter sometimes darker will be easier for you when you stay away eg in hotels or other people's houses. Sorry that doesn't really answer your question though does it? There are black outs that have little suckers that stick to the Windows. They will work better than a blind I think.

We've got bloc blackout blinds, with side channels. They really blackout the room.

Hmmm, Velcro might be the way to go!! Baby I see you point and unfortunately it is difficult to get her to sleep anywhere!!! She is as eternal sleep dodger so I will try anything to maximise her chances of sleep!!!

I bought very very large poppers, made a flat blackout sheet then fixed poppers to corners of (wooden) window frames with nails and sewed other half onto the blackout sheets. Popped blind on and off each day.

Buy blackout fabric, cheap enough, cut it to a size to fit the window, just slightly bigger than the glass itself so there is a tiny lip. Use 'stick and stick' Velcro. Stick one strip to the top of the window frame and the other strip to the fabric.

Peel it off (gently) every day and fold it away.

If the Velcro peels from the fabric side, staple it on.

Works like a dream, blacker than black.

As a very temporary solution (holiday, etc) kitchen foil also blacks out windows.

Baabaa blinds are the same principal (but many times more expensive!)

We use easyblackout, the Velcro strips have an adhesive back and stick to the frame and then you cut the material to size and stick it up. Got ours from Amazon. Completely blacks out the window.

We used a water spray to dampen the window and then tin foil. We used the same bits of foil for quite some time so wasn't too expensive. The results were amazing. Prior to this we had spent loads on various ways of blacking out the room, including made to measure black out blinds (which simply let the light in through the gap by the roller). Now the kids are older we tend not to bother so much but still foil up the windows at the height of summer (god knows what the neighbours think)!

Just don't stick bin bags over your window and leave them up in summer like I did once - cracked the inside pane of the double glazing!

We have the gro black out blinds that stick to the window with suction cups. Then standard black out blinds and black out curtains.

We use foil as well, but do worry the neighbours will think we have a cannabis farm.

There may be many reasons she isn't sleeping. My dd settled down much more from that age so hopefully more sleep is on the horizon for you op.
