Baby turning on tummy during the night

I finally began to get my LO to sleep for longer intervals (mainly by letting her cry for a bit - if she stopped after a few mins which she often did would leave her but if she went full on would go in). This was working OK and was only getting up for 1 bf during the night. However she has now started to turn onto her front whenever she starts to cry, so I can't ignore her now. Before she would eventually settle but now gets distressed cos she can't seem to turn herself back again!

She's 7 months and only just started to do this at night. Any suggestions? I don't know if she turns over and then cries or she cries and then turns over!

Is she in a grobag? if so, have you tried 'strapping' her in with a sheet? Tuck a sheet really tightly around the edge of the mattress.

No suggestions but just want to say i have exactly the same prolem just now with my 7 mth old. Keeps getting stuck on her front against the cot bars. I'm watching intently for any suggestions .I assume this must be a common problem though.

I thought after 6 mths it was fine to leave them on their tums if they rolled there (neither of mine were great rollers)

My DS at that age would get jammed up against the bars of the cot so I rolled up a couple of blankets and squashed them down the sides making a kind of bumper. Seemed to help.

LOL Lyndyloo - my DS started doing this too a few days and he's coming up to 7 months. He's being doing it in the daytime naps for a good couple of weeks but took him until now to do it in his grobag. FWIW we've tried "strapping" him in and the little devil manages to wriggle out. I don't think he thinks he has enough room to turn back again. We've found him in all sorts of strange positions - a favourite one at the moment is lying diagonally at the top of the cot, on his side with his head pressed against the bars and his legs hanging out! We haven't got a solution yet I'm afraid - I just have to keep going to rescue him.

Ah yes, as ponylove says I think it's fine for them to sleep on their front if they've put themselves there, so if that's why you're posting I wouldn't worry too much. My problem is that he starts screaming when he can't get back - a real pain at 3 in the morning!

Yup, latest advice from fsid is its fine if they roll there after 6 months - see half way down the page

My DS (7 months) has been doing this since he learned to roll over (3 months) but it is getting less of a problem. He still does it, and still can't get back onto his back (due to the sleeping bag and bumping into the cotsides, I think) but now he doesn't seem to mind and can stay asleep on his front. There were a couple of tough months when he did keep waking himself up like this, but now it's okay. So just wanted to say the problem may fix itself before too long. Hope it does!

i started a thread on this a little while ago and despite some good advice, did not have much success. dd, nearly 6 months, has now decided she likes sleep on her front so i have to rescue her less. interestingly enough, i think it'd the cot bars she likes as she didnt do it when she was in a travel cot last week!!
fingers crossed for you that your dd stops wriggling soon lyndyloo!

Hi there - had the same problem with dd recently and was using a sleep positioner, but she's now so strong at 6 months that it no longer works! I just decided to remove everything and let her roll around (during the day on the bed as well) just to get her used to the idea of being on her tummy. Eventually - and admittedly with a bit of patting, shushing and controlled crying for about 15 minutes - she sort of accepted it and now goes to sleep quite happily on her tummy and can roll back and forth quite freely. I think once she realises its ok to be on her tummy things should get easier - and of course she will be getting stronger every day! Good luck x

both my DDs only slept well at night once they had managed to "roll over" so it might be a sign of great sleeps to come... is your LO able to roll back, is she strong enough to lift her head ok?

Thanks ladies for all suggestions/advice. I HOPE it's a sign of great sleeps to come btw!

I think she cries as can't turn herself back again so hopefully as she gets older she will. I don't think the grobag helps as it stops her from gripping with her knees to turn back iyswim.

I will just go with the flow and hope she grows out of it. I think she is having a big developmental spurt at the moment. She is doing lots of new things so the rolling onto tum is one of them.

It's ok for them to sleep on their front once they can turn themselves over. Can she turn back again? Ds has slept on his front since he started rolling at 17 weeks. It used to really worry me, but there's nothing you can do about it other than stay up all night to turn her back
