18 mth old night waking - teething/poorly/habit? Help

DS was a terrible sleeper (or good waker) and didn't sleep through til nearly 9 mths. But, from then til about 15 mths gradually got better at sleeping through, til the point where he'd go through maybe half the week, and just wake once the other nights. But it started to decline about 15 mths to just once a week, and he seemed to be teething (pulling ear, flushed face). He now hasn't slept through at all for past 6 weeks.

Can it really all be teething - he's quite good at putting himself to sleep at the beginning of the night unless obviously ill. And if it is is this it now til they all come through - he's only got 8 so far!

Can anyone help me work out why he's waking? Is it likely to just be teeth? And does this mean he has to have calpol/calprofen for the next 18 months too?

Any advice/tips welcome! Am coping okay-ish on the sleep, but turning into an unsympathetic grumpy mum in the night.
