DS has just dropped afternoon nap!

Hello, I've kind of fallen into the GF trap and am now panicking because DS would not go to sleep this afternoon for his 30min nap. Instead he has stayed awake for his bath and last feed and is now in bed asleep. Am worried that he will wake in a few minutes thinking that was his 30min nap and will have to bath & feed him again!
DS is 5mths and up until yesterday was sleeping 30mins in the afternoon, he was taking longer to settle but still having those 30mins shut eye. Has anyone been here before and did your babies just drop this nap all of a sudden?
Please help.
Thanks
Wellsie

Hi wellsie. My son is coming up to 7 months and for the last 6 weeks or so has been really hit and miss with the afternoon nap. He hasn't had one for the last couple of days, but may well decide tomorrow that he really needs one.
I haven't ever put him to bed for the afternoon nap, even though we are very loosely doing GF, but he falls asleep wherever he is when he needs to.
Rambling a bit, but I'd say that it is very normal for a 5 month old to start dropping this sleep. I'd carry on putting him down for it though, and just see how he goes.

Crikey wellsie, that does sound early to drop a nap. But mine were born before GF, so can't offer an opinion on that. Mine were between 3-4 before they dropped theirs, and if they'd had a busy day even 5. Well done!

wellsie - is your ds still having a morning and lunchtime nap?

wellsie · 08/06/2004 19:49

I normally push him out in his pram for this nap but as it's been so hot I put him in his cot yesterday & today. Yesterday, no probs but today I tried everything. I even got him up and took him out for 30mins but he just gurgled and looked around. He didn't cry when I gave him his bath (so not overtired) and he didn't fall asleep on the bottle (so not exhausted). He hasn't woken up yet (touch wood) and has been asleep for 45mins.

Zubb, yes he has 45mins in the morning and approx 2-2.5hrs at lunchtime. He sleeps all night (touching lots of wood) and is generally the GF contented baby.

Wellsie, as long as his other naps are fine I think that GF says that any time from 4 months onwards babys will start to drop the afternoon nap. As he's not overtired at all I wouldn't worry about it.
