Has anyone used controled crying for a 5 and a half month old?? How do you do it?

Hi.
After a very long night of my daughter taking the dummy out playing wity it and chucking it on the floor I have decided it going! I am on the 3rd day of no dummy in the day but at night we put her down awake as she fights us and then she just crys if we don't give the dummy. Then throughout the night she wakes up chatting abd throwing the dummy etc. So how exactly does controled crying work. She gets herself hysterical?Is 5 and half months to young. If so any other way of geting rid of dummy?Please help me :) thankyou. X

If she chucks it, then wait a bit before you give it back. Then a bit longer next time, etc etc. Or you could secure it to her sleeping bag with a short bit of ribbon (it must be short to avoid strangulation risk.)

She is too young for CC. Not sure about dummy though as never used one.

If she's becoming hysterical then cc will be so distressing for you and for her. My ds age 5.5 months goes in his cot awake, and 80% of the time goes to sleep without fuss. Sometimes he cries and we cuddle or rock him. We've been doing this since 8 ish weeks after being scarred by our other ds who was an awful sleeper (eg rocked for 2 hours at bedtime and night feeds for 2 years!). My advice would be to first get your routine sorted so you know shes tired, then try it at daytime sleeps. It might work, it might not. We started with the first morning sleep and would be pottering round upstairs getting ready for school while he was in his cot and he would fall asleep (sometimes). Once he did it at that sleep we tried it at other times as well. But no, I wouldn't leave him to scream or cry for any length of time (although a bit of whimpering is normal). We don't use a dummy sorry so I have no advice on that, but I think my older ds was not helped by his dummy falling out and once they can take it out and look at it/hold it then can't get it back in they're a nightmare in my experience!

CC is not recommended, even by the person who developed it, until 12 months plus.

I thought you meant a 5.5 year old!

My son is 5m and no way would I be doing CC with him.

Ok thanks. I did think thats why she was getting hyserical coz she doesnt understand whats going on.She has got a good routine. She has a bath and then a massage and into bed clothes and sleeping bag. Has a bottle and a story and then if I put her down awake with tge dummy she sometimes goes straight to sleep and sometimes plays with dummy and chats. She might then start crying and we put the dummy in amd she goes to sleep. Its generally about 4-5 in the morn that she spits dummy out and chats loads and throws it around. I have left her but she cant settle without dummy being put back in her mouth. I feel confused and mean coz she is generally happy and is comforted by the dummy. It is just all so frustrating. She sucks her thumb but she wont sooth herself to sleep with it :( x

I'm pretty sure it's quite normal for a baby to wake at 5am.

My son sleeps from 8pm - 5am and wakes up chatting for a bit. A lot of babies still wake up hourly at this age.

I wouldn't get rid of the dummy if I were you. You're nearly at the point where she'll be able to put it back herself and won't throw it out (as she'll know she wants to keep it).

My DS (also 5.5 months) sounds similar. Most night wakings can be dealt with by either a feed or dummy reinsertion. However, any wake ups after 4ish am I have to rock him back to sleep and then bring him into bed with me. Simple dummy reinsertion doesn't work (he spits it out again) and he's not hungry for a feed at that time. However, if I hold him in my arms for a little bit, gently rocking, then he'll nod back off and will stay asleep next to me in bed until 7ish. That last bit of night time sleep, after they've been in bed for 8 or 9 hours already, is the lightest, and the hardest part of the night for baby to stay asleep/ get back to sleep if they wake up.

She's too young. If she's ready to start the day at 5am couldn't you bring her into bed with you then so you can snooze a little longer and she gets a cuddle? Do you ever cosleep? Done safely it's just wonderful.

Hi yeah atm ahe settles back with me in bed for the last couple if hours but didnt no if thos was a bad habit. Its so tricky to no whats right and wrong x
