Help! What do you dress a newborn in at night?

I'm finding myself getting anxious all the time about what my 5 week old dd should be wearing at night.

Our house is boiling in summer and freezing in winter - typical timber-framed new build.

At the moment she wears a sleepsuit and a cotton cellular blanket folded over (so equivalent to 2 blankets) in her moses basket.

I've just purchased a 1.5 tog sleeping bag. Should she just wear a sleepsuit with this or does she need something else? Our room temperature at the moment ranges between 19 and 21 degrees - it's hard to get it below 19, even with the window open.

I also have a 2.5 tog sleeping bag. When would you advise I start using this?

Thanks!

I've been putting my 8 week old dd in a short sleeved vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog gro bag- I think it's been a bit chilly in our house. If it gets any colder I'll put her in a long sleeved vest too. I don't have a thermometer (it became bloody obsessive- gro-egg watching with ds!) so sort of go by what we're wearing- I had on pjs and a pretty thick duvet.

Im having the same problem with dd9 weeks.at the moment our room is between 22-24 even with window open.we've got her in sleepsuit and 1.5 bag now she's in cot (was a well folded blanket but she kicks those off).hopefully someone will come along and tell us both if we're right or wrong.
(I've got a 2.5 but will prob not use it until it starts getting really cold,I've bought it mostly for when we're out and about rather than a snow suit)

They need far fewer layers than you might imagine (and are safer a little too cold than too hot at that age). I always found this to be a useful guide: gro.co.uk/pages/what-to-wear

My bedroom is pretty consistently 18-20 degrees and ds wears a long sleeved vest and a 2.5 tog grobag. He's 4 months now but been the same since he was tiny

My DS wears a sleepsuit and 1.5 tog bag when temp is 19-23 degrees. Any drops below 19 and I switch to 2.5 tog. I feel the cold so go with what I think I would like to wear. I think the bags are warmer than blankets because they never come off and they are enclosed.

It is hard in the early days to get it right, and to feel that you are getting it right. Hope you get comfortable with it soon OP.

The gro guidelines above are good if you're not sure. 2 layers and a 2.5 tog bag sounds too warm to me for this time of year. SIDS statistics in cold weather are indicative of how risky it is to have too many layers, always better to put on too few.
