What to use instead of sleeping bag?

My DS (8 months next week) sleeps in sleeping bags. However, I've realised that when he wakes up (or before he drops off), he brings his knees up and chews the zips and zip pulls on his sleeping bags. I don't like him doing this as I don't know what's in the metal and paint on the zip. But he doesn't like a dummy. He just likes to chew on the zip part of his sleeping bag! So I am thinking of ditching sleeping bags. But what do people use instead? What did generations before us use? Sleeping bags are so handy, especially when, like my DS, they often do a full 180 degree turn in bed.... Does a blanket and sheet really work in such cases? Is it safe?

Is the zip up the side?

FreeButtonBee · 19/08/2015 16:10

Could you turn it back to front? Some makes have zips up the side which might be a compromise. Must admit, it's hate to do without bags at that age!

Padded/thermal sleeping suits?
My DD's sleeping bag from Sainsbury's has a plastic zip.

I used fleecy sleepsuits.

I also sewed a little pocket onto the sleeping bags to tuck the zip into, their fingers weren't long enough to get the zi out once they were in.

Switch to a different type of sleeping bag?

Thanks Peeps. All good suggestions. Yes, unfortunately zip is on the side on all but one of the bags I've got.

We only have GroBag branded ones but they have the zip upside down, if that makes sense, with a flap that you close to cover the zip end near the baby's feet so they can't access it... Maybe try some? They're easy to get second hand if you don't want a massive cost issue...
