all hell breaks loose at about 2am!

He goes to bed like a dream, usually about 6.30pm.

We dont usually hear him then until 2am ish where he is unsettled for the rest of the night. He doesnt seem to need milk.

Its killing us and also his crying wakes up 4 year old dd who is then suffering the next day.

Any ideas or advice please?

Does he reject milk when you offer it to him? What do you do when he does cry? Has he started on solids?

MandyBOO · 15/11/2006 19:24

yeah, he's on solids.

Rejects milk when offered at night

When he cries, we let him get on with it and just stay with him to comfort him.

Mandy what do you mean by let him get on with it?

normalness · 15/11/2006 19:56

My 8mo does this. I used to feed him and he'd go back to sleep. Now he stays awake and howls. Only shuts up if I put him in my bed and let him sleep with my nipple in his mouth. Not very comfy for me but at least it's quiet. Have tried leaving him to cry it out but he just doesn't stop and go back to sleep - cries hysterically for hours. I'm very tired - full time job and 3 kids. Would desperately love everyone to spend whole night in own beds. No advice, sorry, but solidarity.

Is he teething? Have you tried some teething gel? or liquid?

funnypeculiar · 15/11/2006 20:07

My 8 mth/old does this at 4am ... wakes, thrashs/unsettled - usually comes into bed with us & eventually goes off after an hour or so. Her big bro did it too, usually around 1 and/or 3.... No soln that I found other than time... with him we were much 'better' ito comforting him in his bed/not giving him milk etc - made no obvious difference to the outcome
Sorry ....completely unhelpful aren't I

is he warm enough? i have been convinced that my dd is too cold at night for ages and finally bought a fleece blanket 2 days ago. night before last was brilliant - she slept for ages. but then... last night was rubbish again. i think it is a phase that all babies go through at around 6 months, based on my and others' experience, which doesn't help, but is a little reassuring.

i honestly don't think that anything you do to make him sleep is the wrong thing, any bad habits can soon be broken (i hope!) and it makes you a much better parent if you're not miserable and tired all day.

don't let him overheat though. oh god, it's a minefield!
