21 month old suddenly won't go to bed

Hi everyone, looking for some advice.

Since 10 weeks old my little boy has been pretty good at going to sleep in the evenings - he maybe doesn't sleep all night consistently but we never had any bedtime battles...until now...

On Sunday night he screamed his head off when put into his cot and the proceeded to scream off and on till 1.45am. At that point I was desperate for sleep (I had a work presentation the next morning) so I gave him calpol and he then slept to 6am.
Monday night we had the same process but after about 1 HR 40 mins he eventually settled.
Same on Tuesday night.
Last night after 30 mins I took up calpol, he opened his mouth (which he never does) and gulped it down. Layed down and slept all night.
Tonight I did the same, same thing happened.
Given that he takes it so quickly and lays down so quick im wondering if he is in pain as he does have a snotty nose and is maybe due some teeth, but he's in great form all day until bedtime. And the fact that he's laying down so quickly makes me worried he's forming a habit? But how could he be doing that after 2 nights?
After a long day at work and being used to a child that just goes to sleep I'm finding this quite stessful tho I'm trying to hide that from him of course.
Anyway sorry it's so long just looking for some advice. Was thinking tomorrow night Id test him with a syringe of vitamin drops?

That's exactly what I was going to suggest - a syringe of vitamin drops. See what happens.
