Help ! Our healthy 9year old has always been sensitive ie afraid of the dark , sleeps with lamp on etc but for the past 6 months or so he has been waking with nightmares and now refuses to sleep on his own , to the point now where we put him to sleep (have to sit with him until he falls asleep) then at some point in the night he comes into our room and sleeps on the floor next to us .he watched Thriller about 5/6 months ago and this was the start of the nightmares . We hoped he would grow out of it but it's now affecting his behaviour with having broken sleep . We can normally get him to go to bed it's getting him to sleep through the night were struggling with . We've tried audio books and reading to distract his mind but nothing seems to work . Health visitors weren't very helpful and I'm a little concerned to take him the Drs as will just make a bigger issue of it and due to his sensitivity don't want him to feel he's not normal ! .... Has anyone else experienced similar sleep problems ? X

Have you talked to him about it - has he explained what exactly it is that's he's scared of about the dark and why he doesn't like it?

Yes we talk on a regular basis , he has a very creative mind and strong imagination so the slightest noise gets his mind racing , we monitor what he watche s on TV and what computer games he plays . I'm afraid he's just a sensitive soul with a creative mind that runs away with him !
