Settling to sleep through a clingy period

This is the third sleep thread I have posted on this morning, so clearly have a few things to deal with at the moment!
10 month old DS has been settling himself off to sleep pretty well for a while now but just over the past week has become quite clingy with me which is interfering with him settling to sleep, as he cries and stands up in his cot when I put him down.
Just wondering how best to deal with this. I don't want to reinforce his need for me to put him to sleep, but I also don't want to traumatise him by just leaving him to cry. I am not anti CC btw, but it feels a bit wrong while going through this current phase. I am not ruling it out, just don't want to reinforce his fears and make it worse.
I am also trying to night wean (starting tonight!).
How would you deal with this?

Id say just repeat, repeat, repeat.

Put him in the cot, lie him down, say "Nan Night, sleep time now" (or whatever). He stands and cries. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

It may take a long time and a lot of patience initially.
