1 yo not sleeping and coughing/choking

DS is 1. He's reasonably easy to settle. Bath, book, milk, bed. I sometimes rock him a bit but he's normally down within 20 mins of giving him his milk. (7pm ish)

He normally wakes once before we go to bed (10-11) but settles v easily (just dummy and back down).

Then 2-3 times more before 12. Sometimes he's easy to settle, sometimes less so. Recently (last month?) he seems to be waking himself up with a hacking/choking cough.

Then he normally wakes up around 3 ish. And then a couple more 4-5 ish when he's normally harder to settle and gets into bed with one of us (DP, mostly), then he normally settles and sleeps until 7-8am.

Tonight he's not gone down at all and is asleep on me. He's coughed/choked 5-6 times tonight already and I gave up trying to settle him in his cot. I've given him calpol (which I normally resort to when he's screaming, which he was after one coughing fit).

Questions:
Should I worry about the cough? He's had it at least 2 weeks and he doesn't have it in the day. It's more like choking than a cough, could he have something (food? Fluff?) lodged that's causing him to wake up.

Secondly: I know we're in some "bad habits" but I wondered if anyone has any ideas of things we could "do" to cut down the night wakings. They aren't bad, it's just there's a lot of them (5-6 every night). He hasn't fed at night since 9mo and has a dummy, is a v good eater and on 16oz cows milk per day.
