Montessori floor beds - aka a mattress on the floor

DD is 13 months and currently co-sleeps with us. The arrangement is working well but I want to transfer her to her own room in the coming months.
Lowering her into a cot has always been our downfall but she sleeps beautifully at nursery on a mat on the floor. I'm seriously considering a Montessori style floor bed, or more bluntly, a mattress on the floor. We invested in a decent, coir, sprung mattress for her cotbed but I would really love to talk to anyone who does this.
What bedding do you use? Does it get chillier nearer the floor? Do you air the mattres regularly?

Our cot bed is very close to the floor in bed mode. DS2 was in a toddler bed by 17 months, as he climbed out of the cot. Is it worth converting the cot to a toddler bed, and putting a spare duvet on the floor in case she tumbles out?

I also think that lowering her not quite to the ground is less likely to disturb her: I can kneel down, and transfer child into a bed, but getting all the way to the floor is back breaking.

Why not get a low bed? She might sleep better at nursery because it is nursery not because of the bed. My DCs sleep better when I don't put them to bed (i.e. im out of an eveninh)/because they think I'm not around....
