My son had never been able to settle himself to sleep and will only sleep if I lay with him and cuddle him until he is asleep. He also hates his cot and cries hysterically when he is put in it awake and has since birth!
When he was new born he slept in the day but not the night so I was always exhausted and would often have to sit down stairs on the sofa at night with him as he just wouldn't sleep! When he did fall asleep it was just easier to put him in bed with me so we co slept from a young age. Being my first I have now realised what a mistake I made as he refuses to sleep unless I'm in bed with him and won't sleep in the cot! I have just put up with it until now but he is getting so big he takes up all the room in my bed and I need to get him into his own room!
When he does fall asleep I put him in his cot beside my bed but he often wakes up an hour or two later realises he's in the cot and stands up and cries. If I don't settle him back quick enough he wakes up completely and won't go back down for an hour or more. And if I don't take him out of the cot and cuddle him in my bed when he wakes he will cry hysterically. I've tried leaving him to cry but he gets to the point of being completely hysterical within 2 minutes and I can't leave him.

If I put him in the cot awake he cries instantly stands up and goes into a complete melt down! He cries so hard he gasps for air and i just can't leave him in that state!
He isn't talking in sentences yet although he understands a lot of what we say the only idea I have is to wait until we can talk it through with him!
I can't ask anyone to baby sit because he doesn't sleep alone so I can never leave him past bed time!
I need help and my bed back!! Smile
