Early morning waking - is it time to wean or add the night feed back?

My little one is 5 months and I've decided to drop the night feed. He was sleeping until 7 for a week but has started waking at 5 crying and very hungry. I don't want to get into a 5am habit and don't know whether to add the night feed back in or do I need to wean? I know weaning may make no difference.

I also struggle to keep him awake long enough at 7 to get a full 7oz feed in.

Any advice much appreciated!

Bab, I had exactly the same thing. Unfortunately weaning made no difference to his sleeping - although he's much more content during the day.

Please don't drop the night feed, he sounds like he's hungry for milk. My ds 6 months now is exactly the same. I honestly thought we'd both be getting better sleep by now! For a sort while it even improved....We have 5 am or 5.30 wake ups every day....I'm just trying to ride it out. He also wants to go to bed very early , it's just his body clock. At least we have our evenings to ourselves! Look at the threads on here where babies are screaming until midnight!

Even with the night feed he might still get up at 5am. I catch up on TV and laundry!

I wouldn't drop the night feed until he is well established on solids tbh. I expected a night feed until at least 6 months (ds took until 8 months to give his up - I gave gradually less in the bottle until he never woke for it)

Have you tried a dream-feed?

BABC01 · 07/08/2014 23:57

Thanks for your advice. We have just dropped the dream feed down to 2 oz. he's had a load of milk today so I'm going to ride it out tonight and if there's an eArly wake up! I'll bring the dream feed back tomorrow night.

It's all very interesting and it's my second child!

DD had night feed until she was 8 mo. It got progressively later and I'd just feed her at, eg 5am, then she'd go back to sleep for 2 hrs.
