Is 4 mo old sleeping in too late? No naps during the day.

My ds (4 mo) goes to bed at about 8.30. Sometimes he'll have a top up at between 12 and 2 but usually he goes through until 6ish when he has his first feed. He then goes back to sleep after about half an hour, and doesn't get up again until 10.30 or even later. Whilst this is convenient for me as I can see to the dds, he then doesn't nap for more than 10 mins at a time during the day and feeds every three hrs. By tea time he is overtired and we have three or four hrs of screaming/nodding off/screaming. I am wondering if I shoudl get him up earlier from his morning sleep, say about 9ish, in order for him to have a better nap later? Any advice would be gratefully recieved!

I'd do the same as CarlyP, nearly3 - hopefully then you won't get the screaming at tea time, and falling asleep in his tea! DS at that age used to get up around 7, nap around 9 for an hour (I used to wake him up if he was still asleep by 10ish, unless I wanted to shift the lunchtime nap til later), then nap again around 12 for 2 hours or so. Sometimes he'd have a cat nap in the afternoon too if we were in the car or buggy. Then he was always in bed again for 7. I always found more sleep in the day meant he slept better at night.

Hope it works for you.

Thanks for the advice. You'd think I'd know what to do with ds being my third, but I've never had a baby who actually sleeps before!
