3 month old thrashing about in cot after 1st waking

My DS is 13 weeks and every night after his first waking he spends the rest of the night semi asleep but thrashing his arms and legs about in his crib. He normally wakes for the first time at about 2:30 at the moment, I breastfeed him and put him back down asleep and within 20 minutes the thrashing about begins. I remember my first DS wriggling a lot in the early months but not this bad. We would swaddle him which helped but this DS has had hip dysplasia so we can't do that. He was in a pavlik harness until last week but would still kick about in that all be it with his legs kicking out to the sides. It wouldn't be so bad but I don't get any sleep after the first wake up (been awake since 2:15!) and I have to pat him to help keep him asleep.
Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions?

Could you not swaddle just his arms?

Ewan the dream sheep- borrow one to try if you can or a white noise app?

I'd not thought of just swaddling his arms. It's most likely the hitting himself in the face that wakes him up eventually. I'll give it a go.
Ewan looks amazing icklekid! It might be worth trying. I think I'll ask around and see if anyone has one, although if it's working for them they'll be reluctant to let me borrow it for a night! Wink
