Sorry, this is a bit long...
DS has never been a good sleeper. Through relentless efforts, teamwork and good luck we had got to the point where he would go to bed alone most nights, sleep through half or more and when he did wake up, would settle fairly quickly if DH went in and lay down on the floor with him for a bit (if I went in at that point he would usually actively work hard to stay awake so I avoided it).
He did not come into bed with us simply because we found that would keep him up even more - the excitement factor of being in mum and dad's bed etc.
In the last week, we've had another shift. He's been waking absolutely inconsolable between midnight and 2 am. Absolutely will not settle with DH and screams "Mummy" Mummy" until I turn up. Tears, snot flying the whole nine yards. I can lie down with him in his bed and he'll usually go to sleep. But it might take a little while. Instead, somehow, he's landed up in our bed a couple of times. And what is weird is that within seconds of getting into bed he is absolutely passed out again. Dead to the world.
We could try moving him back to his bed at this point, but we suspect that he'll just wake up shortly after freaking out again. What we're trying to work out though is whether this is some kind of strange fear he's going through and that he only genuinely feels safe when he's with us (me?). The level of upset is genuinely unusual. He's just turned 3.
Thoughts?
