4 month old practising his rolling over skills most of last night - when will this pass?!

DS is just over 4 months and usually a great sleeper at night (daytime naps are another story)...last night however he woke numerous times and was wriggling around constantly in his cot. He sleeps on his front due to reflux issues ( I know the SIDS advice but he literally got no sleep on his back and coughed all night).

At 1 am he was crying and had managed to spin 180 degrees and his head was pushing against the cot bars, I moved him back to his normal position. At about 5 am he had rolled from his front to his back and was smiling at me looking very pleased with himself! he wouldn't fall back to sleep and just kept wriggling around - has his night time sleep been ruined or will this just quickly pass as his rolling skills develop?! Help!

I've got this right now!

We put him on his side now with a folded blanket either side to stop him rolling.....he's slept really well. Using cotton cellular blankets.

Thanks for the tip! Will try that tonight - fingers crossed!

Unless he's crying, leave him to it surely? Once he's able to roll you could spend every night rearranging him , or you could let him figure it out himself what's a comfy snoozing position. Obviously if he gets wedged somewhere uncomfy you move him, but don't worry otherwise, especially as he already sleeps on his tum.

Unfortunately he does cry as he ends up either hitting his head on the cot bars or sideways on with his feet kicking against the side! I've just heard about a cot bumper which is made of material that babies can breathe through so I'm going to look into that.

OP I had the same issue and my friend gave me this foam toblerone-shaped thing - like 2 toblerones, a long one and a short one, which you put in the cot and wedge baby between them. I was entirely skeptical and would never have bought one myself but its totally done the trick re the rolling.
The waking up wanting a cuddle/feed problem is another issue which unfortunately no toblerones can solve...

Also google four month sleep regression and wonder weeks. Hope you get better sleep soon.

uodlibet - thanks for the info I'll look into that as the problem is continuing! Last night he was in a 1 tog gro bag and he still managed to roll over then got his arm stuck in between the cot bars!

I've just bought a safe dreams cot wrap thing which should arrive soon!

Slippersandacuppa - i'm hoping it's not the dreaded 4 month sleep regression! He woke up for the day very early today at 5.30 am and wouldn't go back to sleep - i feel that the routine we had in place has gone out the window!
