My three year old DD has always been a fantastic sleeper. She has slept through the night from 5 weeks old and even now only wakes due to illness / bad dreams / toilet but it's rare. She normally does from 7.30/8pm to 7am on nursery days and 8am on non-nursery days. She does not regularly have a nap.

Today, she has come home from nursery in a foul mood. Last night was not a late one and she woke up for nursery late too so I don't doubt she's had plenty of sleep although she did wake a few times complaining of bad dreams and once went to the toilet (this isn't a frequent occurrence). However, she is clearly very tired. I tried to put her down and she just screamed and screamed at me. Kicked and thrashed around in bed etc. I managed to calm her down and I think she is dropping off. I haven't heard another peep from her.

I suppose my question is is napping at this age normal? It's probably less than once a month that she has a daytime nap, only when she is clearly tired in the day. She isn't going to school until 2015 but I am worried about her acting like she has today and possibly still needing a nap when she does go to school! Is this likely? Do you think I should be getting her to sleep earlier? Nursery starts at 8am so getting up later isn't an option. What time does your 3yo go to bed / get up ? Is it possible that she is tired due to the fact that she had unusual broken sleep?
