5 month old wont go to bed

So my LO is 5 months old and exclusively breastfed.
We started a bedtime routine at about 6 weeks old which consisted of bath, story, feed and bed. After a few weeks she started to respond and would be in bed by 7:30 and asleep by 8:30pm with the help of a dummy.
Well this was fab and then at about 3.5 months old it just stopped. She wouldn't go to sleep at all and would cry for about 2hrs before eventually dozing off only to wake 20mins later.
Well we tried many things, moving her bedtime later, sorting out her naps in the day (she would only nap for short periods of time in her bed taking a while to settle or she would sleep on me) but nothing has worked.
The past week we have used a bit of controlled crying but going up in 10sec increments and only going up to 3min gaps but she will cry and cry for 2 hours and gets so distressed that even when you go in the room she wont stop crying.
Me and dh are struggling so much. It takes hours to get her to sleep and then she wakes up for a feed.
We really need some help and advice on what we can try to get her to settle herself and go to sleep.

I am in no way an expert on things (my 8mo is a terrible sleeper!!) but just thought I would suggest moving bedtime earlier?! my ds goes up to bed at 6 30, to be in bed for 7. any later at all and he just will not go down, it's like he goes past the point of being tired enough for bed and is too tired to sleep!!
