Puzzled - 4.5 month old keeps crying in sleep but doesn't wake up? Teething?

Not sure what to make of this. My Ds (18 weeks, ebf), has, for about 2 weeks, been crying in his sleep but without waking up. Sometimes this is a screaming cry, sometimes a 'little' cry, but it never stops unless I pick him up and/or offer the boob (he's not hungry as he's only there a few seconds or minutes before the crying stops and he's in a deep sleep).

He self settles for some naps and some bedtimes (still working on that) but never seems to be able to self settle back once he starts crying in his sleep. He doesn't even wake up if I lift him out of the cot, just carries on crying. He only really 'properly' wakes (eyes open) twice to three times a night to feed, and the crying thing is pretty much every hour or two.

Could this be some kind of teething pain, or....bad dreams!? It happens every night now. I give him the Bonjela teething gel, but it doesn't make any difference. He has all the teething symptoms during the day.

I'm really puzzled. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be?
