Opinions on 2yo old in a double bed?

Ok guys, I'm hoping I don't get attacked so if you don't think it's a good idea then definitely say so but please don't be nasty about it, I'm just asking for advise and opinions before I make a decision. Ok so we are moving house soon and my 2yo is currently sleeping in a cot bed (the bed now without the sides) but when we move we are hoping to get rid of it as it's abit tatty, we also have a spare double bed that's in good condition and we were going to get rid of that too and buy a new toddler bed when we moved. My question is, Is it acceptable, safe, sensible for a 2 yo to have a double bed? She slept in one safely for 2 weeks during our holiday and when DH suggested it I just had this wonderful image of a gorgeous frilly mattress skirt, baby pink bedding and lots of show cushions lol! Since my niece came to live with us following the death of my sister, money has been really tight and DD has been getting charity shop clothes and not treated as much as I would like so maybe that's why I was up for the idea of a big princess bed haha, silly I know. I just wondered what you ladies thought about this and if you could advise on the matter. Thanks. :)

I can't see any issues, but think a 2 yr old might prefer a single bed, and slightly more floor space to play on?
But then my nearly 5 yr old is only just coming out of his cot bed, so I'm probably at the other end of the spectrum.

Only other thing to consider might be waterproof undersheets for night accidents when starting to go nappyless at night.

my 2 year old went into, and still sleeps in a double. Very handy when she wants me to give her a cuddle if she wakes in the night. John Lewis do some children's bed sets for doubles too.

Dd2 used to sleep in a double bed at about that age.

We have one for ds since he was too and we all love it. Great for getting in beside for stories. Only downsides are; difficult to get children's bed linen for a double duvet. We use a single duvet. And lots more washing in case of accidents.

My eldest has been in a double bed from around 22 months. Less chance of falling out. Great for reading stories or snuggling in with him on any bad nights.

mine went straight into a double bed from the cot.. he's still in it now. Its so handy to have for illness or anything else where it's easier to go in with them.

Great thank you ladies. I asked my sister and she says it is Silly and that my daughter could end up fussy if sleeping at other peoples houses and turn out spoiled. I do not want this at all, I just thought abit of luxury won't harm??

Why not? DS2 (now 7) is in a double bed because it's a sofa bed we had nowhere else to put.

The only thing is that when he sleeps in a single elsewhere he tends to spread out or even fall out...

Can't see that sleeping at other peoples homes is a good reason not to. It'll be useful when she starts having sleepovers.

There's no reason not to.

Thank you, i agree. I'm sure if she turned her nose up at a single bed I'd deal her accordingly anyway. She won't be sleeping out for a long time anyway so that wasn't at the forefront of my mind when we came up with the idea. X

My Dd has been in a double bed since she moved out of her cot at 18 months. She loves her big bed!

It's been great for cuddling up, stories, sleepovers, illness etc and she's never fallen out thankfully!

I have found it easy to get double duvet sets in children's designs. Usually next or John Lewis have some choices.

My Dd used to sleep in a double bed and it's just as well as I have some great photos of her sleeping in ridiculous positions where she would definitely have fallen out of a smaller bed.

Your sister is being ridiculous.

I'm so glad you all agree, what makes her advice evenore ridiculous is that she's got a 5yo in a double bed since she was 4. Now call me stupid but that slight age gap surely can't make any difference in each child's attitude to sleeping in different size beds. Why wouldn't her DD be fussy or spoiled just cos she waited 2 years longer? Lol x

DDs room doubles as the guest room and she's always had the double that was there before she was born.

She has muttered about floor space occasionally, but I point to the fact that her playmobil takes over 1/2 the living room and the whole conservatory.

We're doing it for our 3 year old - he's a rotator, and you're as likely to find him with just his head poking out from under the bed (where he's rotated off the bed, then back under it) as on it.

This means at about 5:30 he gets cold and comes and joins us.

In a double this isn't an issue, plus a double quilt is harder to escape from, plus, he and his brother were co-sleepers, so we figure until they're both a bit older they could even share the double and they'd quite like it (once the baby is old enough to stand his ground!)

Ooh that would be lovely for bed time stories and cuddles. Can't think of a single reason why it would be a problem. Spoiling her?! That's ridiculous.

Thank you so much everyone. We have decided we are definitely gonna do it. I did worry about her wriggling under the duvets and getting lost but I think I will just place her over the double covers and keep a toddlers duvet in the cupboard to put over her. I'm really excited to do her a nice bedroom, I've got some bare pine furniture that I'm gonna be painting up today. Can't wait. X

Your sisters reason doesn't is silly. What about little kids that have the racing car bed, does that make them fussy?

Even at 13 DD2 still uses a single quilt on her double bed. As a little girl she just got in a muddle with a double one and it would end up mostly on the floor.

Both my children have double beds - it is great they never come in our bed, we have lovely cuddles and stories. I can lie in the middle with a child on either side. In fact I would really recommend it.

I find Joules does lovely duvet covers for children and you could always go for plain white. My DD has plain white and some rather jolly curtains.

Floor space isn't a issue for us.

I've heard of families doing this, very handy as you say for an extra guest bed, she'll complain much less about sleeping on a mattress/blow up bed on your/a sibling's floor than your adult couple guests will do!

(Though they might not like the pink princess sheets!)

I don't think its much different from putting a 2 year old into a single, its just a bit bigger. From a safety aspect its no different as most single and doubles are about the same height.

The only thing I'd say is that your dd might not like having a big, heavy double quilt so it might be worth having a single quilt on the bed. My ds1 struggled a little going from a cotbed quilt to a single quilt at about 2 years old so he had his cotbed quilt on his single bed for a while.

Yes, we just used a single quilt for DS - it's a lot less washing and easier to change than a double.
