16 week old - wakes every 40 minutes

My DS is 16 weeks old and I am very keen to improve his sleep!

He has naturally got into a pretty good pattern of waking at 7, then having a morning nap at 9am, longer nap over lunchtime, and cat-nap at 4ish.

He goes down to sleep pretty easily, BUT he inevitably wakes up 30/40 minutes later.Often he wakes with trapped wind in his bowel, other times I assume it is just moving between stages of his sleep cycle. In the last few days he has been learning to roll so now he also wakes up because he finds himself stranded on his stomach...

We try to resettle him with the minimum possible intervention, ie shush-pat rather than immediately snuggling. He usually will go back to sleep quite quickly, but nonetheless it means a very disturbed night for me!

Can anyone help?

I am feeling so desperate, because I rarely get more than 90 minutes of undisturbed sleep and that is unbelievably brutal.

I wouldn't dream of doing CC, but I am starting to feel really depressed about the lack of sleep. Any ideas???

ps We are breastfeeding, but in the last few weeks he wants a 4am feed (about half the time) we now give him formula so I don't have to do it. He usually only takes 30 - 60ml.
