Advice for 11week old baby sleeping on tummy...

What woudl anyone say about putting an 11 week old baby to sleep on his tummy. My ds will go to sleep on his tummy very well but if on his back will cry and cry and can take hours to settle. The health professionals all say back as they cant say otherwise but does anyone have any views or personal experiences please.

My DD is 13 weeks and keeps rolling onto her tummy She doesn't seem able to roll back. I don't fel happy about letting her sleep on her tummy until I know that she can roll back by herself but then I am a worrier.

What about taking the middle road and putting him on his side? My DD slept on her side between wedges from birth until about 4 months, then left her to do her own thing. She also hated sleeping on her back. Thing to remember if you put him on his side, is to alternate both sides regularly. Although the advice to is to put on their backs, a lot of babies don't actually like it and feel very exposed. If you feel you must put him on his back, try and swaddle him to prevent the startle reflex bothering him, although that may have gone by now.

Can you try putting him on his back once he's asleep?

We could literally do anything to ds once he was asleep. Even now at 2.5 years we can move him from carseat to pushchair to carseat without him waking up. However, dd is the complete opposite.

My dd1 slept better on her front, but I always put her to sleep on her back - I think the stats re 'back to sleep' are pretty convincing esp. in this heat. But, then, my friend had both her dss on their backs and they were fine.

If ds has reflux or a snotty nose maybe he'd like having his cot raised a little at one end? Also think I have seen some type of bolster for side sleeping but can't think where.

I would allow her to fall asleep on her tummy and turn her to the side when she is already asleep (though she may wake up...)

From the day that ds learned to roll over he has slept on his tummy with his bum in the air, I turned him back a few times but he immediately rolled onto tummy again so just gave up and let him sort it out for himself. One your baby can roll it is not up to you anymore. I never let the room get hot though if I could help it.

chubbleigh, my dd2 still sleeps like that now and she is two! I agree, once they can roll you just have to let them get on with it.

ds ALWAYS slept on his tummy from day 1.
didnt matter what i did, he would not sleep on back, end of.
i let him do it in the end and never slept properly as i was always checking him.

hope this helps with ds when he was a baby he would do this from being a couple of weeks old so what we used to do was fold up a jumper/t-shirt and put it under the matress on his crib so it was slanted so he would then have to roll up hill!! and obviously he couldnt so stayed a sleep on his back

I would try swaddling your baby and see how that goes. Our girl fails her arms around a lot when getting off to sleep and keeps hitting herself in the face which wakes her up. The swaddling is a godsend! She doesn't particulary like getting swaddled and its a rare morning she hasn't escaped but it does the business for getting her to sleep in the first place. It does look unkind but it must be comfortble or she would let us know!

I know it goes against all the advice, but my dd slept on het tummy from day 1 too and in the end I decided just to let her because it wasn't worth the screaming trying to put her on her back. She always had a strong neck and could turn her head from side to side so I didn't worry too much. I guess it depends how much of a worrier you are and whether you'll get more sleep with him on his tummy, or if you'll be up every 10 minutes checking on him.

Both DS2 and DD slept on their stomachs from about 3 weeks old. With DS1 it was like turning a switch - he went from screaming like mad to fast asleep in about 10 seconds. I know it is not what is advised but there are benefits: strong neck, early crawlers (that may not, on reflection, be a benefit) as well as good sleepers. I worried, but I still put them on their fronts because that is how they could sleep...
