Toddler sleeping sitting up (19 months)

Hi everyone

This is my first post, hope you can help!

My toddler (19 months) has had a few bad weeks of sleeping as he has had a cold. We got in to the habit of singing him to sleep for a few weeks. He was a great sleeper before then.

A few nights ago we left him to cry for a bit to try to get him out of the habit of waking up as his cold is quite a lot better. The next night he slept through but only seemed to sleep sitting up! We kept lying him back down again whilst he was asleep but a few hours later he would sit right back up again, still asleep but with his head bobbing around and knocking on the edge of the cot. Two nights later he was back sleeping on his back again but tonight he is back sitting up again. I had put cushions round his cot so he doesn't look as uncomfortable but still he can't be sleeping as well as when he's lying down.

Any tips? Is this totally unusual? Should I take the pillows away so he's uncomfortable again in the hope he gets himself back lying down (but I can't bear the sound of his head knocking on the cot!). I feel so distressed and upset by it as I feel it is all my fault he is doing this.

Thanks for the help!

hi, i dont know cant give you any advice but my 23 month dd does this - we co sleep and im a light sleeper i notice that she will just sit up sometimes and sway from side to side but she is asleep then when she is ready or for whatever reason she just lies back down again. its pretty odd to watch but she does alot of talking in her sleep too. i think she has a very strong imagination and dreams alot!

Thanks... it's good to hear there's someone else out there with something like this too... the last few nights he had been doing a mix of sitting up and lying down so I'm feeling a bit better about it now. I guess it's just what he wants to do at the moment!
