And yes, understand that a stair gate on the door is compulsory if I don't want to be woken up by ds prising my eyelids open Grin

I waited until she was climbing out of her cot. She was well over 2.5 I think.

As late as possible! Ds moved at 3.5y, and dd will move at the same age (bed's being delivered on Weds). In general the earlier you move them the more problems you are likely to have - though there will be lots of Mumsnetters who had no problems. I've never needed a stairgate on the bedroom door.

My ds moved into his bed at 14 months. At 2.5 he has never got out of bed and come into our room and I can only remeber one occasion after he was put to bed that he got out again.

I have no idea why he doesn't get out of bed - he even stays in it in the morning and after his nap until I go in and get him.

The point I'm trying to make is that every child is different and there's no right or wrong time to move them.

The reason he moved so early was because I was pregnant with dd and we were warned that sometimes the older one can be very possessive over the cot if they remember it being 'their's'. We bought his toddler bed to put up in his room so he got used to it being in there and practise climbing in and out of it. The first night it was there he refused to go into his cot and has not slept in it since!

I think as long as your ds is a confident walker then he'll be fine to go into a low toddler bed if you want/need him to.
