Too much sleep in the day for a very sleepy 5 month old?

First the good news - ds2 slept 7pm-7am last night, for the first time following a month of sometimes waking every 1-2 hours at night. He is 5.5 months old.

I think part of his problem was that he loves his sleep and is sometimes having 4 or 5 naps in the day. I have just put a very grumpy little boy in his cot because it is clear that all he wants is more sleep. He fell asleep in the car this morning at 8:45 and woke at 10:15 when I returned from shopping. I have tried to keep him awake, but he fell asleep on his play gym at midday. I woke him for lunch but he was having none of it and screamed until I put him in his cot where he promptly fell asleep.
Anyone else with cherubs that just want to sleep a lot of the day at 5.5 months? There really is no keeping them awake if they want to sleep, is there? The only reason I am trying to keep him awake is I want him to continue to sleep more at night. Last night was fab - no chilly trips to his room and the first good night's sleep (for me) for months!

Hi EvansMom,
My ds2 is 5 months old tomorrow, and I know with him, if he wants to sleep, there is absolutely NO keeping him awake! I don't think you can at this age.

Ds1 used to be like your ds2, he slept quite a lot in the day, but I found if I tried to keep him awake, he would get overtired and grumpy, not feed well, and as a result, sleep even worse at night. If he slept well in the day, I usually got a full nights sleep.

I used to enjoy the time when he was in bed as I got some much needed time to myself (ah, the joys of only having one child!)

Enjoy him, he sounds gorgeous.
