Sleep regression 6 mo - should I be shortening his daytime naps?

Hi
My 6 mo was a good sleeper but for last 8 weeks has varied between waking at 20 minute intervals at his worst and now seems to be at 1 hour intervals. Should I be waking him from long (2 hrs +) day time naps? He is my second child but I can't remember things being like this with my first (can't remember much tbh due to lack of sleep!) so I'm not sure if I'm allowing him to be more nocturnal by letting him nap for this long?

How Many hours of daytime sleep does he have in total?

It varies between almost none some days and 5 hrs other days, but neither seems to improve the night waking. Randomly we get the odd night where he will sleep 4 hr stretch and I've tried to replicate these circumstances but can't achieve this through influence! He has always been a really placid baby but wakes screaming now, although doesn't seem to respond to teething gel, calpol etc, winding or feeding (he is bf and only just starting on food), just seems to take a certain amount of time before he can calm down and then he goes back off.
