One month old wont sleep in crib at night

Please can someone give me some advice/tips. My 1 month old son will sleep in his crib in the day and will settle himself after a little grumbling & a little cry yet come nighttime he will not sleep in it. He is nearly asleep when I put him down and he opens his eyes every time and just gets more and more cross. I pick him up and cuddle him and he stops, as soon as I put him down he starts again. This can start at 7pm, 8pm, 10pm or 3am... It makes no difference. He will happily sleep in his chair or laid on our bed so I'm sure its not because he feels unsafe and as I said he will sleep in it during the day. Any ideas please??

My DS is similar, though I've never tried to make him sleep in it during the day! My mum suggested putting a hot water bottle in the crib to warm it before putting him down (not at the same time as baby!) and laying him on a muslin you've been using to feed him beforehand so that it smells reassuring too. This helped a bit, though I have to say the only thing that really worked was swaddling, and he's getting rather too big and strong for that now!

I found the amby baby hammock helped with this when my ds2 was a baby. The self-rocking movement tricked eased him back to sleep if he opened his eyes. (My 2 month old dd is different though and seems to prefer a flat solid surface Hmm so I'm seriously considering selling the hammock!)

Clodia's suggestions are good. And maybe consider a baby hammock?
