Help me with gro bags and bedding before I lose my mind!!!!!

Ds is just about to hit 3 months and is a big baby-about 18lbs now (I think I have really high calorie milk!!!) I am driving myself a bit mad with trying to sort out his bedding, he is kicking his blankets off in his sleep so is cold I think at night so I bought him a gro bag, size 6-12 months based on weight, when I put him in it I played peek a boo for ages trying to see if it was too big and would end up over his face, decided that at a push because the arm holes are too big and if I pulled it up it did cover his nose and mouth that I would ask dm to sew the arm holes smaller which she's done, I put him in it and then pulled it up to see if it would go over his face (he was
laughing through this!!) and decided it could, there is a lot of space at the bottom of the gro bag and I wondered if they were meant to be snugger so there feet sort of held it down or is there meant to be loads of room at the bottom. I have taken him out of it now and changed him back into a vest and sleep suit and gone back to blankets which he will duly kick off and I will be up most the night putting them back on!!

Who new a post could be this long about bedding!! Please tell me tight your baby's gro bag is, I've kbackered so lost all perspective!!

The first time I used a grobag it seemed to have a million miles of space at the bottom. And then it seemed only five minutes and the feet were pressed up against the bottom. dds are teenagers now so time has telescoped IYKWIM.

They are a truly great invention and I was v. annoyed when they grew out of even the largest size.

There is supposed to be lots of room at the bottom for them to grow into.

Why not try a 0-6 month one from a supermarket? Don't take tag off just see how it fits. If he's not too tall it should be fine?

Hi suzie I think the space at the bottom is Fine. I have opposite problem 6 1/2 month old to small for the 6_12 month One she only weighs 15lb. I have had to take her out of it and going to need to get her a new One. I bought a sainsburys One which was brill length but I coukd pull it over her head it all drives me mad!!

I think you just need to get him the smaller size, o-6 months. My DC's were fairly hefty but they didn't go up gro-bag sizes until they hit the right age. They mustn't ride up above their heads. I loved gro-bags, used them until they went into beds.

there is supposed to be space at the bottom - gives them room to grow and creates a pocket of air to help keep them warm. The ones I had were 6-18 months and were huge to start with - they soon fill them out though. DS went into the 18-36 month size when he grew out of the 6-18 month one.

My dd uses these and if your child is larger than average it can be difficult. I would go on length rather than weight. Dd is 91st centile baby for weight and length so ag 7 months is starting to get too big for 6-12 month bag. I just make sure shd has plenty of wriggled room around her legs which gives nice cosy fit.

I agree that you should use the smaller size first though as there is a 0-6 month one that would have smaller head and arm holes so they cant go down inside them

Can I ask what tog you ladies use? We have one that is a 3 but it feels thick and I'm worried about ds over heating so not dared to use it yet!!! Scared of SIDS etc!!

I didnt know you got 3tog ones. I used 2.5tog when it was colder and 1tog in the summer. This info is from the grobag website:

Our 2.5 tog Grobag Baby Sleep Bags are ideal for Autumn, Winter and Spring and can be used right up until the Summer nights become warm. If your nursery is usually below 20°C, we recommend a 2.5 tog Grobag. Our 1.0 tog Grobags are ideal for use from during the Summer months when the nights are warmer and are also very useful in early Spring and Autumn for day-time naps whilst your baby is still in a 2.5 tog Grobag at night. 0.5 tog Grobag Baby Sleep Bags are for use in high Summer, for holidays abroad, or if your child is unwell and has a raised temperature.

Some of the 0-6 month gro-bags have poppers on the arm holes to make them fit more snugly and stop baby from sliding down. Can't remember which make we had that had these but possibly Gro-bag and/or Green Child. As pps have said there should be a fair amount of room lengthwise.

They are supposed to have space at the bottom. If your DS is a strong blanket-kicker, like mine was, he might be able to kick off the bags with shoulder popper fastenings. If so, go for the zip front. Depending on the tog you use and the temperature in his room, it might be an idea to put a light cardigan over the top on colder nights (Don't think it's recommended, but it worked for us).

2.5 tog unless it is summer. ATM DS is in 2.5 tog with a babygrow. As it gets colder I'll add a vest. The room is about 21 degrees.

I found slumbersac.com to be good and have Asda ones and sainsbury's and tk maxx do some nice ones. I can't justify the money for grobag.

Thanks guys. It was a gift so didnt pick it.....I may give it a miss a too much of a worry wart and get a lighter one. He always kicks off covers but sleeps through night so dunno if cold or not! He only sleeps in a baby grow at moment with a vest on colder nights.

Thank you so much everyone, I was given two grobags size 0-6 months that I didn't even try on him because he was too heavy judging by the label, that was clearly daft and we will go back to the shop tomorrow and see if they will let me try the 0-6 months one on him and go from there. I had no idea bedding would get this complicated!!!!!

So do you put clothes on them and the grobag, or just the grobag? And when is it ok to start using them - is 3 weeks to young? Thanks!

Don't know about other types, but I bought White Company ones. They had a zip that enabled them to be opened at the bottom.

This cooled Dss feet (has a hot foot even now) but also meant the bag lasted longer than it took him to grow past the bottom

These were brill for DD as she alwAys kicked blankets off. She loved her sleeping bags as she got older and when she outgrew them she slept with one like a blankie, lol.

The funniest thing is when they walk round in them

Mrsnpatz I think it depends on their weight, my first dc was too small for ages but the 2nd went straight into a bag. Go the grobag website they have loads of good info!
