Which comes first, the room sharing or the sleep?

It feels like a chicken & egg situation & I don't know what to do for the best. Advice, experiences etc would be gratefully accepted.

DS1 is 4, DS2 almost 13 months. 2 bed house, DS2 currently still in with us. We have fallen into a rut of feeding to sleep, me bringing him into our bed through sheer exhaustion after 2-3am, boob being the only thing hat gets him off to sleep. Sometimes he will sleep from 7pm-2am. Other times he's up at 10.30ish. I am certain there is an element of us disturbing him when we come to bed, particularly my DH who needs TV/book to drop off to sleep is very clumsy and apparently incapable of whispering.

I am no stranger to sleep deprivation having done all this with DS1 however he was in his own room from 9ish months and although he didn't reliably sleep through the night until he was 18 months, I found I wasnt reacting to every last whimper and therefore he and I both slept better. But I'm concerned about him disturbing DS1 who is not the deepest sleeper in the world and then having to deal with both of them being awake.

So do I risk it or wait until he is sleeping a longer stint? Our cot is a little elderly and I'm not sure it will tolerate much more collapsing and reassembling damn you Mamas and Papas and your overpriced MDF

We have two bed place so we slept on blow up mattress on floor downstairs for a few nights to sort out ds2's sleep as I just couldn't see how we could sort it while we were in the same room and I didn't want to move him and risk waking ds1. Then when his sleep was a bit better we moved him in with ds1. Wasn't ideal but worked for us.
