How do we get 6wo DD to sleep in her moses basket?

DD will be 6 weeks old tomorrow. At the minute we co sleep, I'm not 100% keen on it as I just worry and don't sleep that well but it gets us sleep.

I would much rather she slept in her basket and then I just get her out to feed her and put her back again.

We've tried using a hot water bottle to warm her mattress. We've tried putting her in awake and we've tried putting her in asleep. But neither works really. She will occasionally fall asleep if one of us sits and keeps a hand on her. But that isn't 100%

What can we do to try and make her fall asleep there?

Thank you Smile

Give it time. Keep trying and she'll get there. I think around 10 weeks it got a bit easier then by 3-4 months it was easy to put both of mine down. Went straight to a cot though. Mattresses in baskets can be rubbish and crinkly!

"Mattresses in baskets can be rubbish and crinkly!" I agree!! You are doing better than I did/am at 4 mths if you can get her to sleep in it at all! I've never managed.

As Iggly says, keep going. Are you using a gro-bag? It helps to stop them noticing the cold mattress. Also white noise can help. But my advice would be not to get too hung up on the moses basket - do what you need to to get yourself enough sleep.

We aren't using a gro-bag at the minute as our room is so warm. It was 20 degrees last night despite the window being open all day.

Do you have a carrycot on your pram that can be removed. My dd1 and dd2 seemed to prefer this as it was more cosy

I am a big fan of swaddling, and so was DD. Large muslin cloth or cotton sheet, wrapped around snuggly (snugger than you think), and laid down. Worked a charm for us. It may well be worth a try.

20 degrees is cool? Well DD finds that cool. You can use a 1 tog bag with just a nappy. Check the chest to see if too warm or cold.

My DS (now 5) never slept in the bloody thing - and in retrospect I can completely see why - they must be so uncomfortable! and they really smell of wicker etc, they creak, they're awful. If we ever have another baby, I'll be putting them straight into the cot (with proper supports etc, and next to our bed) I really don't see the advantage of those useless baskets.

Mine never slept in moses baskets either, and I concluded afterwards that they were one of those baby items that you think you need, but don't really.

I'd recommend a summer gro bag also.

McKayz · 31/07/2012 21:13

Iggly, we were boiling. We have an old house with thick walls and it always feels pretty hot. It's very annoying.

I'll give the summer gro-bag another go.

Can you go straight to a cot instead?
