when they don't need a nap till it's too late...

I seem to be at an in-between stage with DS, 2.10.

He's up earlyish (6am) and bounces around till about 3 or 4 when we starts to get very tired and needs a nap. If I put him down he sleeps for at least 3 hours and more likely four. If I try to wake him after 1.5 or 2 hours he is very unhappy.

Is this just a stage I need to get through, till he doesn't need the nap so much?

At the moment I'm pushing through, with some quiet tv time, reading etc. and then putting him to bed at 7.30.

I would love to know if anyone else is dealing with this.
